Human Behavior Does a MAKEOVER

Recently one of my colleagues resigned from an IT Company. Everyone wished Good Luck except for a certain section of people. The idea behind this boycott was not clear. Was it the Pain and Suffering which they still wanted to infuse on the resigned person or the Pain and Work Pressure they (i.e. people who boycotted) would be experiencing once the resigned person is not available in the organization?

The thought behind this comes from a recent development which happened 2-3 weeks back. This colleague of mine is highly technically talented, works well under pressure and is a calm and composed character. Everyone used to seek his technical guidance from a trainee to a Group Leader. Before he resigned everything was cool, people were interacting properly, and things were working as expected. The work related discussions went to the extent of office lifts and facebook chats. But the day he resigned people stopped talking to him. They started behaving as if he had committed a murder. Even in the office lifts they behaved as if they don’t know him. I was literally shocked and later laughed with my colleague watching people behaving in such an abnormal way.
Changing jobs in IT companies is not a new thing. This has been coming of ages from when the IT boom started in the Silicon Valley. India being the center-hub of cheap English speaking intelligent IT Consultants was bound to have more jobs Outsourced from the West. In this scenario, if a talented person is getting better role, better work and finally better salary then what’s the harm? I have no doubt in claiming that Indian IT Companies have the most Pathetic Salary Structures across the industry.

A shift in company usually leads to better position, better work environment and obviously better salary packet. In such a case, an unworthy Supervisor will have his ego blasted because he knows if he sat for the same interview he would not have cleared. A Good Supervisor always takes a resignation Sportingly and wishes Good Luck to the candidate. On the other hand, a worthless Manager will only think how he can save himself as he does not know the job and the shield (or the Pressure Absorber) has resigned.

The reason for me writing this article is:

-          I believe there are lots of people in the IT industry, who are technically not strong (even with several years of IT experience) but are surviving because they have a Godfather.  Since they are not self-made hence are the root cause of this issue.

-          Program Managers or Project Leaders get their work done and completed by junior team members. What this does is the junior team member gets hold of the task and shifts company leaving the Project and the Manager in doldrums.

-          When technical experts are made Project Managers. They find situations when they are unable to handle their team. In such scenarios, managerial aspects are completely missed and the ugly personal human behavior comes into the picture.

There may be more points which are not coming in my mind as of now, but yes everything here is true.
